When the cashier rolled her eyes and made that rude gesture, I noticed my deaf dad's puzzled expression. It was like she thought he couldn't see her, but boy, was she wrong. Dad might not hear, but he's sharp as a tack when it comes to reading people. Watching him handle situations is always something special. After all these years, I knew better than to underestimate him. He took a deep breath, paused, and then did something that not only surprised the cashier but left everyone in the store watching with their jaws practically on the floor. What my dad did next was something no one saw coming and it left the cashier stunned.
As Dad stepped up to the checkout line, Linda, the cashier, was more interested in her phone than the customer in front of her. She scrolled through her social media, barely acknowledging our presence. "Hi, Linda," I said, trying to grab her attention. She flicked her gaze momentarily toward us, her fingers never stopping their constant swiping. Dad carefully placed our items on the counter, his usual warm smile ready, though it seemed lost on her distracted demeanor. Linda's inattentiveness was pretty frustrating.
I watched as Linda continued to barely look up, her fingers tapping impatiently against the counter. It was like she couldn't be bothered with her job. "Excuse me," I said, trying to get her to at least look at Dad. All the while, her eyes remained glued to the screen. Dad stood patiently, even as Linda's fingers drummed an annoyed rhythm. The disrespect seemed to hang in the air, heavy and unmistakable. She was clearly not interested in doing her job right.
Dad, as always, refused to be rattled. He flashed Linda another friendly smile, placing our groceries on the conveyor belt with care and precision. Each item was gently set down, as if handling glass. "Here you go," he signed, adding a little bit of flair, but Linda’s eyes didn't leave her phone. I could tell Dad was trying his best to stay calm and composed, always showing grace even when others didn’t. It was something I had always admired about him.
