On a cold winter morning, Jake spotted a dog shivering in the icy lake. Despite his best efforts, the dog resisted leaving the water. Jake's concern grew as he waded in, hoping to save the animal. It wasn’t until he saw the dog's leg that he realized the shocking truth.
"No way," he muttered, eyes wide with disbelief.
“Hold on there, buddy,” Jake tried to reassure the dog. Its whole body was stiff and tense from the cold, and it had trouble breathing. Jake did his best to lift the dog out of the water, but every time he tried to do that, the dog began to whimper. It wasn’t until Jake felt around underneath the surface that he truly realized what was going on.
“Ah!” he yelled as he pulled his hand out of the water. He had touched something that was attached to the dog’s leg, and now his whole hand hurt. He waved it around to ease the pain, even sticking it in the snow on the waterbank. When he looked at his hand again, it was completely red and started to swell.
